Welcome to Kyoto Station. Beneath its sweeping roof, a little orientation helps you step into the city with confidence. Start by knowing which side you need.

The Karasuma side is to the north, towards Kyoto Tower. The Hachijo side is to the south. Save your hotel's address and its recommended station exit before you arrive.

Kyoto brings together ordinary J R trains, the Shinkansen, Kintetsu and the Karasuma subway. These have different gates. Read the operator and line name as well as the destination.

For a day out, check the specific service: J R trains serve places such as Osaka, Nara and the Sagano area. Kintetsu also serves Nara, but arrives at a different station.

When leaving the railway, follow the exit for your onward journey. There are signed north to south pedestrian connections. Use the official map to find the appropriate walkway and lifts for your bags.

For local sightseeing, compare the subway, train and bus options for your destination. Leave time to find the correct stop, then enjoy Kyoto at your own pace. Plan your next connection at Fumi Tours dot com.

SAME AREA. DIFFERENT GATES.

Know the name on the signs.

Follow the railway company and line first. The central/Karasuma side and Hachijo side lead to different parts of the surrounding streets; check your hotel’s access directions.

JR West

Local and regional lines

For destinations including Osaka, JR Nara and the Sagano Line towards Arashiyama. Check the exact line and destination.

Shinkansen

JR Central

Separate bullet-train gates and transfer gates. Follow your reservation and live departure board.

Kintetsu

Kyoto Line

A separate railway, useful for Kintetsu-Nara. Limited express services require an additional ticket.

Kyoto subway

Karasuma Line

An underground route through central Kyoto. Other parts of the city may need a connection or a walk.

ONE STEP AT A TIME

Your walk through the station.

  1. Choose the railway for your destination

JR Nara and Kintetsu-Nara are different stations. Compare the arrival with your sightseeing plan before selecting the train.

  2. Follow the company’s gate signs

JR, Shinkansen, Kintetsu and subway gates serve different areas. The big station building contains all of them; a shared roof does not mean a shared ticket.

  3. Leave on the useful side

Karasuma/Central is the north side; Hachijo is the south. Check the official pedestrian passages if you need to cross between them.

PUT IT TOGETHER

Two useful journeys.

A day in Nara

Choose JR Nara or Kintetsu-Nara first, then follow JR or Kintetsu signs accordingly. Both can work; your walking route and ticket decide which is useful.

Arriving with luggage

Use your hotel’s access directions rather than leaving through the first exit. For a bus, confirm the current stop and destination; allow room for a more comfortable taxi or subway alternative when needed.

Before you leave

For Nara, decide whether you want JR Nara or Kintetsu-Nara before choosing a train. For buses, confirm the stop, direction and current payment instructions rather than assuming every bus works the same way.
