WHEN YOU ARE FEELING UNWELL

Find the right care.
Know what to expect.

For an ordinary consultation, your hotel can help call a suitable clinic. Confirm the department, patient’s age, language support, reception time and payment before travelling where possible.

An adult feels unwell.

Ask for a clinic that can assess the problem today. Tell staff the symptoms, when they started, medicines and allergies. For fever or infectious symptoms, ask about arrival instructions.

Your child is ill.

Ask specifically for paediatrics and give the child’s age. Explain symptoms and how the child is behaving, drinking and passing urine. Seek prompt professional advice if worried, especially for a young baby; a temperature alone cannot decide whether to wait.

Toothache or an injury.

Ask for a dentist for toothache, or a service equipped for the injury. A night internal-medicine clinic may lack imaging or fracture treatment. Severe mouth or neck swelling with breathing difficulty needs 119.

Your first clinic visit, step by step
  1. Ask whether the clinic can see you now and which entrance to use.
  2. Bring identification, insurance details, payment, medicine packaging/list and allergy information. Get emergency help without delaying to collect these.
  3. Explain that you are visiting Japan. Ask about language assistance and any fees.
  4. After the examination, ask for follow-up instructions and a receipt and itemised statement.
  5. If given a prescription, ask which dispensing pharmacy can fill it today.
Official guide to medical care
Pharmacies, prescriptions and medicines from home

A drugstore may sell everyday items and over-the-counter medicines while its prescription counter is closed. Look for 薬局 (pharmacy) or 処方せん受付 (prescriptions accepted), then confirm the dispensing hours and stock.

Prescription-only medicines generally need a Japanese clinician’s prescription. Bring the generic name, strength and original packaging of your usual medicine; a foreign prescription does not guarantee a refill. Ask a pharmacist about active ingredients and possible interactions rather than choosing by packet colour.

Before travelling, check your exact medicine and quantity with Japan’s Ministry of Health and the Narcotics Control Department. Some substances require advance permission or are prohibited. Keep essential medicine with you when forwarding luggage.

Official medicine import rules · Controlled medicines

Travel insurance, payment and receipts

Visitors should expect to pay for medical care. The amount depends on the service, tests, medicines, out-of-hours fees and provider. Ask about an estimate and payment methods when circumstances allow.

Contact your insurer’s assistance team promptly. It may arrange accepted direct billing, or you may pay and claim later; your policy and provider decide. A policy card alone does not establish payment approval. Keep receipts, itemised bills, prescriptions, payment evidence and the assistance case number.

Before the trip, check cover for existing conditions, children, emergency dentistry, activities and evacuation. Save the number callable from Japan. In a serious emergency, call 119 before dealing with insurance.

STREETS, EVENINGS & EVERYDAY JUDGEMENT

Enjoy the welcome.
Keep your wits about you.

Japan rewards relaxed exploring. Use sensible precautions, ask local staff when unsure and respond to the situation around you. The city notes identify documented concerns and useful local context.

Choose your own night out.

Decline street touts. See the menu and cover, time and service charges before ordering. Keep control of your drink and stay with trusted companions. If a bill becomes threatening, seek police help rather than confronting people alone.

Keep money and belongings close.

Close bags in crowds, protect your PIN and check card transactions. For suspicious charges or a stolen card, contact the issuer promptly. Keep evidence and ask police for help with a crime.

Have a way back.

Check your last train or bus, save the hotel address in Japanese and leave phone power for the return. Use an authorised taxi rank or established booking service. Move to a staffed, public place if you feel unsafe.

Lost belongings, a passport or a separated child

For lost property, contact the station, operator or venue first and report the loss to police. Keep the reference number. Tell police clearly if you believe it was stolen.

For a lost or stolen passport, contact your own embassy or consulate in Japan after reporting it. Keep a secure copy separately; replacement travel documents depend on your country.

If a child or vulnerable companion goes missing, alert nearby staff immediately. Give a description and last-seen location, and contact police promptly where safety is at risk. Agree a meeting point before a crowded outing.

Embassies and consulates in Japan
Harassment, assault or a business dispute

Move towards staff or other people if you can safely do so. Call 110 for immediate danger and 119 for serious injury. Ask police and your embassy about support after an assault; medical care is available.

For a non-urgent business complaint, the tourist consumer hotline is separate from police and medical dispatch. Check its current languages and hours at the official page.

NATURE, WEATHER & OUTDOOR DAYS

Let the conditions
shape the day.

Check official notices for the actual place you are visiting. City weather, coastal hazards and a mountain trail are different planning questions.

Earthquakes & the coast.

During shaking, protect your head and shelter from falling objects and glass. Follow staff. Near the coast after strong or prolonged shaking, or a tsunami warning, head immediately towards designated high ground or a tsunami evacuation building. Wait for the official all-clear before returning.

Rain, heat, snow & volcanoes.

Change exposed plans early when warnings or closures apply. Keep away from floodwater and swollen rivers. Plan cooling breaks in heat, winter grip on ice and destination-specific equipment in mountains. Respect volcanic exclusion zones.

Insects & wild animals.

In vegetated areas, use covering clothing and suitable repellent according to its label. Check skin and clothes after an outing. If a tick is attached or illness follows a bite, seek medical advice and explain the exposure. Give wildlife space; check local bear and trail notices before woodland walks.

Ask your hotel about the correct evacuation route for each hazard. Save essential information offline. Alerts and mobile networks can fail; follow local authorities and staff. Tsunami guidance · MHLW outdoor precautions
