Hi, I'm Fumi. Welcome to Kyoto. Beautiful temple gardens, little streets full of delicious discoveries, and time to enjoy them. Come with me, and let's find your Kyoto.
Begin with the Kyoto you've dreamed of. At Kiyomizu-dera, wooden terraces open towards the city, above the lanes of Higashiyama. Leave time for the walk, and a little pause along the way.
At Fushimi Inari, vermilion gates lead into the wooded hillside. You can enjoy the lower paths without making the whole mountain climb.
Across the city, Kinkaku-ji catches the light beside its pond. At Nijo Castle, grand gateways and gardens reveal another side of Kyoto's history.
These are choices for different outings. Pick a neighbourhood, rather than rushing to see everything in a day.
For a slower morning, sit beside the pond garden at Tenryu-ji, then wander beneath Arashiyama's bamboo.
In eastern Kyoto, explore Ginkaku-ji's moss and carefully shaped gardens. The Philosopher's Path follows a canal through a quieter part of the city. Further south, Nanzen-ji brings temple grounds and that wonderful brick aqueduct.
Feeling hungry? Nishiki Market is a lovely place to discover Kyoto's food. Choose something tempting, and enjoy it at the shop before moving on.
Browse Teramachi's covered arcade for a little shopping. For families and railway lovers, the Kyoto Railway Museum offers a different sort of adventure.
As evening comes, enjoy Gion and Shirakawa's traditional streets, respecting private lanes and the people who live and work here. Then discover the lantern-lit atmosphere of Pontocho, and settle in for dinner.
Choose your favourites on our Kyoto page. Its map and suggested outings help you shape an unhurried day.

A little planning. Room for discovery. Choose what you love. Keep nearby places together. Leave time for lunch.

THE PLACES ARE ONLY THE BEGINNING
Knowing where to go is a start. Understanding what’s on your plate, finding a thoughtful gift and connecting with someone you meet can make the day unforgettable.

A richer food experience
Ask what a dish is, how it is cooked and the traditions behind it. Tell Fumi what you enjoy and what you want to spend, then explore the menu with more confidence.

Shopping with confidence
A beautiful craft, a curious ingredient or the perfect little gift. Ask Fumi about products and prices, and get help asking the shopkeeper the questions that matter to you.

Conversations worth having
Ask about a local favourite. Share a little of life back home. Fumi can help with the language so a simple question has room to become a real conversation.

The Fumi app is your interactive companion for the day. Tell her which places you’d like to visit, then talk with her about the sights, the food and the little discoveries along the way.
THE LITTLE THINGS THAT HELP
Useful now, and easy to find again on your phone.
Choose a small cluster for your day. Use rail or subway for longer journeys, with buses or a taxi for the last stretch where useful. A Suica or ICOCA is a rechargeable travel card, not an unlimited pass.
Start with our railway basics ↗Leave your suitcase at your hotel or a luggage service. Carry water, a little cash and a charged phone; leave room in your plan for a proper sit-down break.
Kyoto luggage services ↗Kyoto’s official maps show public toilets and useful facilities. The Universal Sightseeing Guide helps you check step-free routes, facilities and suitable places before you go.
Official accessible sightseeing guide ↗In wet weather, consider the railway museum or covered downtown arcades. On hot days, shorten outdoor walks and plan breaks; in cooler months, take a layer for the evening.
Kyoto weather & clothing ↗Gion is a living neighbourhood: use public streets and respect photography signs. Eat market purchases at the shop, and give worshippers and residents room to pass.
Enjoy Kyoto responsibly ↗A garden, palace and special exhibition can have separate tickets or closing days. Each place has its official visitor link, so you can check the details for your own date.

A FEW GOOD QUESTIONS
Choose one area rather than crossing the city for every famous sight. Old Kyoto, slowly is a good starting point for temple views and traditional streets. The Arashiyama outing is an alternative for gardens and bamboo.
No—these are choices for several days. Start with one suggested outing, or add two or three nearby places to My day. The planner shows visit time separately from travel, queues, food and breaks.
Start with one attraction, read its access notes and use transport for the approach. Shorter visits can still involve steps or hills. The suggested outings explain how to shorten them, and the official access links help you choose a suitable route.
