A gentle arrival in Tokyo
Begin with two nights at Haneda and time to recover from the flight. Choose Ginza’s grand avenues or Sensō-ji’s great red lantern in Asakusa for your first outing, then return to your airport base.
Fumi journeys · 2027 inspiration
Castle. Island. Onsen.
Then six nights to call Kyoto home.

The Fumi travel atlas
A journey that grows quieter
Tokyo lights, a white castle, a sacred island and a town of steaming baths: each stop brings a different Japan into view. Then come six nights in a Kyoto townhouse, with time to find a favourite café, wander temple lanes and return to a front door that feels familiar.
Three ways to make it yours
From Tokyo to old Kyoto
Two Himeji nights give the castle a full day. Miyajima is a one-night island stay, followed by a substantial rail day to Kinosaki. Six Kyoto nights are the relaxed centrepiece.
Culture, comfort & a little wonder
Follow the journey from Tokyo’s evening lights to the streets of Higashiyama. Six chapters, with time to enjoy the places between the photographs.
Begin with two nights at Haneda and time to recover from the flight. Choose Ginza’s grand avenues or Sensō-ji’s great red lantern in Asakusa for your first outing, then return to your airport base.
Board a westbound Shinkansen and watch the city give way to smaller towns and mountain horizons. The journey becomes part of the holiday, with Himeji waiting at the end.
Himeji’s white walls lead you into a world of timber interiors and stone defences. Give the castle and Koko-en a full day, then return to Dormy Inn for a bath and a bowl of evening noodles.
Cross the water to Miyajima and see the vermilion torii beyond the shore. A night on the island leaves room for dinner at your seaside hotel and time to enjoy the waterfront as evening settles.
Two nights in Kinosaki bring a different rhythm: a yukata, a bath, a walk beside the willows. Take your time between bathhouses, cross the little bridges and choose somewhere in town for dinner.
For six nights, Kyoto Miyabi Inn becomes your home base. Put the kettle on, step out towards the temple lanes and find a café worth returning to. Leave room for the small discoveries between the famous sights.
A white castle against the sky. The sound of water beside a bathhouse. A Kyoto street you learn by heart. These are the moments to leave room for.
The heart of the experience
At Kyoto Miyabi Inn, the whole machiya is yours for the stay. Unpack, find a neighbourhood café and leave space between the famous sights.
Near Higashiyama station and the Furukawa shopping arcade, the house puts you in a lived-in part of eastern Kyoto, with Gion within walking reach. Kiyomizu-dera and other southern sights make a longer outing on foot or by local transport.

Furukawa arcade, a tea stop and a first evening walk.
Kiyomizu-dera and a slow Higashiyama afternoon.
Choose one garden or museum and give it time.
Nishiki, a small restaurant and a favourite café.
A rail outing to Uji—or another day close to home.
Go back to the place you loved most.
Optional days from Kyoto
These are choices, not a checklist. Pick an outing when you feel like a change of scene; another quiet Kyoto day is equally worthwhile.
Price the chosen day trip separately within your transport allowance. The regional pass expires on day 9; it does not cover every route or later Kyoto outing.
Rooms with a purpose
The final route names every stay. The island room, Kinosaki room and Kyoto townhouse are shared by two; the remaining prices use the supplied per-person hotel figures.
Arrival · 2 nights
Two nights at a Terminal 3-connected hotel give you a gentle landing and a full day for recovery or a compact Tokyo outing.
A$420per person for the stay · planning estimate
A$210 per person per night in the supplied example. Confirm room occupancy and meal inclusions. The adjoining onsen complex is included only in specified room plans; otherwise admission is extra.
Castle town · 2 nights

A$238per person for the stay · planning estimate
A$238 per person over two nights. Confirm the room occupancy and breakfast plan. The evening noodles are a light snack rather than a full dinner.
Sacred island · 1 night
A shorefront island stay, with a Japanese-style room and dinner at the hotel. Plan the shrine visit and evening around the hotel’s location and port shuttle.
A$200.50per person for the stay · planning estimate
A$401 for the shared room, or A$200.50 each. The example selects a sea-view room and two meals; the hotel also sells rooms without a view. Check the shuttle operating hours and dinner arrival time.
Bathhouse town · 2 nights
A town base for yukata walks, canal-side lanes and public-bath visits. Akaishiya’s breakfast-focused approach leaves evenings free to discover Kinosaki’s restaurants.
A$404per person for the stay · planning estimate
A$808 for two adults over two nights, or A$404 each. Check whether the quoted plan includes breakfast. Dinner is extra; confirm bathhouse access, local bath charges and any private-bath reservation.
The centrepiece · 6 nights
A traditional machiya rented to one group at a time, close to Higashiyama station and the Furukawa shopping arcade. Enjoy a private living space, simple kitchen and bathroom.
A$464.50per person for the stay · planning estimate
A$929 for the whole six-night stay, or A$464.50 each for two adults. That averages about A$77.42 each per night. The futon bedrooms are upstairs; arrange arrival with the host, who is not based there throughout your stay.
Airport finale · 1 night
Return to the airport the day before flying home. An easy last dinner and a proper night’s sleep make a morning departure more comfortable.
A$210per person for the stay · planning estimate
A$210 per person in the example. The hotel connects to Terminal 3, while ANA international flights use both Terminals 2 and 3. Check your flight’s terminal and allow for a transfer if needed.

Your fifteen days in Japan
A suggested programme with time for the journey itself. Day 1 is your arrival day in Japan.
Arrive at Haneda and settle into Villa Fontaine Grand. Terminal 3 connects directly to the hotel; arrivals at another terminal need an airport transfer. Choose a room plan with onsen access or pay the hotel-guest admission.
Choose one compact outing: Asakusa for temple streets or Ginza for shops and cafés. Return for a relaxed evening and another bath if you wish.
Travel from Haneda via Shinagawa or Tokyo to Himeji. Settle into Dormy Inn, take an easy first walk and save the main castle visit for tomorrow.
Explore Himeji Castle and Koko-en at your own pace. Leave time for lunch and the town, then return to Dormy Inn for its hot-spring bath and an easy evening.
Begin the regional pass if it suits your tickets. Travel via Hiroshima and Miyajimaguchi to the JR West ferry, leave luggage where arranged, and explore the shrine waterfront. Use Miyajima Seaside Hotel’s port shuttle and arrive before dinner.
Take the ferry back to the mainland, then trains via Hiroshima and a suitable connection towards Kinosaki. This is a substantial transfer day: reserve the limited express, allow connection time and plan dinner in town after checking in at Akaishiya.
Let Kinosaki set the pace: a bath, a canal-side walk, lunch and another bath. Check which bathhouses are open and your pass inclusions. Akaishiya leaves dinner free for exploring local restaurants.
Travel to Kyoto and continue to Higashiyama. Follow Kyoto Miyabi Inn’s arrival instructions, unpack properly and take a first walk through the neighbourhood.
Start close to home around the Furukawa shopping arcade and nearby streets. Choose Heian Shrine or Chion-in, then return for a quiet evening.
Set out early for Kiyomizu-dera and southern Higashiyama. Leave time for tea and a slow return through public streets near Yasaka Shrine and Gion.
Browse Nishiki Market, make time for a tea experience or a small museum, and find somewhere you would like to visit twice.
Choose a garden or explore another Kyoto district by rail. An optional Uji outing works for tea and a change of scene; staying in the neighbourhood works just as well.
Leave this day open. Revisit a favourite temple, browse crafts or enjoy a long lunch. Finish with a last evening walk, respecting residents and the signs around Gion’s private lanes.
Take the Tokaido Shinkansen to Shinagawa or Tokyo, then continue to Villa Fontaine Grand Haneda Airport. Keep the last evening relaxed and check the terminal for tomorrow’s morning flight.
Allow time for international check-in and any transfer from Terminal 3 to Terminal 2. The supplied example uses a daytime ANA-operated flight to Sydney; compare the current schedule and terminal for your own dates.

On day 8, reserve the limited express to Kyoto, then use the subway or a taxi for the townhouse. The last local connection may need a separate fare.

Arrive at KIX and transfer to Rinku. Settle into Henn na Resort & Spa, eat nearby and leave the first evening easy.
Make this a recovery day: a coastal walk, a bath and perhaps a little shopping. Avoid filling the day just because you can.
Travel from Rinku to Kyoto on a separate ticket, then continue to Higashiyama. Follow the host’s arrival instructions and explore the streets around the townhouse.
Set out early for Kiyomizu-dera and southern Higashiyama. Leave time for a tea stop and a relaxed return through public streets near Yasaka Shrine.
Choose a garden or museum, browse Nishiki Market, or explore the Furukawa shopping arcade close to home. Keep room for an unplanned café stop.
Choose a quiet temple morning or an optional rail outing to Uji. Return for your last Kyoto dinner and prepare a small bag for the ryokan stays.
Start the five-day regional pass today. Take a reserved limited-express train to Kinosaki Onsen and reach Yamamotoya in time for check-in and your selected dinner service.
Walk beside the canal, choose a bathhouse or two and enjoy a long lunch. Check the day’s bathhouse openings with the ryokan and leave time for dinner.
Reserve the Kinosaki–Himeji limited express, continue by Sanyo Shinkansen to Hiroshima, then local rail to Miyajimaguchi and the JR West ferry. This is a substantial transfer day: check the complete connection and reach Arimoto before its dinner deadline.
Visit Itsukushima Shrine, see the torii at different tides and explore Daishoin or the island lanes. Consider Mount Misen only if weather, time and your walking plans suit.
Take an early ferry and continue via Hiroshima to Himeji on the last pass day. Leave luggage at the hotel and allow the afternoon for Himeji Castle and Koko-en, checking last admission times.
Buy a separate ticket to KIX; the regional pass has expired. Work backwards from your flight’s check-in time with a generous travel margin. For an early departure, add the optional final Rinku night.
The clever bit of the route
Before and after: pay separately for Rinku–Kyoto on day 3 and Himeji–KIX on day 12. Start the pass on day 7, not on airport arrival.
Within the window: use eligible JR trains and the JR West Miyajima Ferry. City subways, most local buses, taxis and Miyajima’s visitor tax are extra. Reserve limited-express seats and check pass eligibility.

Two adults travelling together: a separate hotel room each in Rinku and Himeji, sharing one entire Kyoto townhouse. Rinku and Kyoto prices extend shorter-stay examples at the same nightly rate; they are planning estimates, not live quotes.
Arrive at Kansai Airport and transfer to Rinku. Check in, have a simple dinner and leave the first evening unhurried.
Start with the waterfront and a bath. If you feel rested, head to Namba for Dotonbori food and lights; check the last return train before dinner.
Make this an Osaka sightseeing day, or stay around Rinku for the park, cafés and another soak. Staying by the airport means city outings involve a longer train ride.
Travel to Kyoto and settle into the townhouse. Find groceries, walk the neighbourhood and enjoy an easy Gion evening.
Link Yasaka Shrine and Maruyama Park with the lanes of Higashiyama. Continue towards Ninenzaka, Sannenzaka and Kiyomizu-dera if the walking suits you.
Visit Fushimi Inari early, choosing a short walk or a longer climb. Leave the afternoon for Nishiki or a rest, with Pontocho as an evening option.
Explore the bamboo paths, Tenryu-ji and the river around Togetsukyo Bridge. Pick a few places and leave time for lunch.
Choose Uji for tea and riverside walks, or Nara for temples and deer. Staying in Kyoto for a favourite café and a quieter garden is just as good.
Take the JR Special Rapid towards Himeji, settle into your own room and walk towards the castle for a first look. Save the main visit for tomorrow.
Give Himeji Castle the morning, then enjoy Koko-en at a gentler pace. The castle interior involves steep stairs; choose the parts that suit your mobility.
Travel via Osaka to Kansai Airport with a generous connection buffer and the airline’s required check-in time. For an early departure, add a Rinku night before flying instead.
Ordinary trains · Separate tickets
Pay for the journeys you take. The planning budget uses regional trains; Shinkansen, reserved-seat services and extra outings can be priced separately.
Take a JR or Nankai service that stops at Rinku Town, then walk or take a taxi to the hotel. For a late arrival, check the last train and the hotel’s arrival arrangements.
Use the JR Kansai-Airport Rapid towards Osaka, then a JR Special Rapid towards Kyoto. Add the local connection to Higashiyama and your townhouse.
Take a JR Special Rapid bound for Himeji, checking the destination as some services finish earlier. Ordinary seats are unreserved, so a seat is not guaranteed.
Use the JR Special Rapid to Osaka, then the Kansai-Airport Rapid. Board the airport-bound portion: some trains split at Hineno, with the other portion continuing to Wakayama.
Allow A$100–130 per person for the four main transfers. This is a planning allowance, not a quoted fare. Local transport, optional Osaka / Nara / Uji trips, station-to-hotel journeys and taxis are extra. Plan the last transfer around the actual flight, including connection time and the airline’s check-in deadline. For an early departure, add a night near KIX.

The details that help
The machiya has stairs and upstairs futon bedrooms. Make the accommodation fit your group’s needs, and agree check-in with the host.
Use station storage or arrange luggage forwarding where it helps. Agree delivery with the receiving property, especially a house without a full-time reception.
Choose walks and outings for the weather and opening days. Six Kyoto nights give you flexibility to move a garden visit or enjoy a slower day indoors.
