A wonderful change of scenery

Go south.
Then take the scenic way.

Begin with Tokyo, fly to Kagoshima for four unhurried nights, then settle into Fukuoka’s food-loving rhythm. The final chapter turns to the rails: a white castle, Hiroshima, Kinosaki’s bathhouses, the San’in coast and a last night in Nara.

This self-guided journey is for travellers who enjoy variety and the pleasure of getting there. The first ten nights give you three generous bases; the last five are a more active sequence of one-night stays.

March example: 7–22 March 2027 in Japan, returning to Sydney on 23 March. Use the route with your own dates and book each part directly.

Your day-by-day travelling companion

Sixteen days. A world of discoveries.

Open a day for the route, a manageable plan and the connection that matters.

Showing all 16 days

01Sun 7 Mar 2027 · Tokyo / OmoriLand softly in Tokyo

Sydney → Haneda → JR Omori

The day ahead

Arrive at Haneda, settle into Omori and keep the first evening simple. There are two full Tokyo days ahead, so a neighbourhood dinner and a good sleep are plenty.

A first bowl of noodles, the glow of a shopping street, and that unmistakable feeling of being in Japan.

02Mon 8 Mar 2027 · Tokyo / OmoriOld Tokyo, one easy outing

Omori → Ueno → Asakusa → Omori

The day ahead

Begin with Senso-ji, the Nakamise approach and a riverside stroll. Leave space for coffee and a slow lunch. One area explored well makes a rewarding first day.

Follow a side street away from the temple approach and find a little place for tea.

03Tue 9 Mar 2027 · Tokyo / OmoriTokyo at your own pace

Omori → Tokyo / Marunouchi → Omori

The day ahead

Choose the handsome Tokyo Station frontage and Marunouchi, or a Ginza afternoon. Our Tokyo Railway Tour adds a more structured day if you would enjoy practising the network.

A department-store food hall is a good place to choose a picnic or an easy evening meal.

04Wed 10 Mar 2027 · KagoshimaSouth to volcano country

Haneda (HND) → Kagoshima (KOJ) → Shiroyama

The day ahead

Fly to southern Kyushu and settle into the hilltop Shiroyama for four nights. The generous stay is the heart of the first half of this journey.

Your first warm bath, and a view out across the city toward Sakurajima.

05Thu 11 Mar 2027 · KagoshimaKagoshima, with time to linger

Shiroyama → city / Senganen → Shiroyama

The day ahead

Get to know Tenmonkan and the waterfront. Choose Senganen for a garden afternoon, keeping the rest of the day pleasantly open.

Try a local speciality such as kurobuta pork, or stop for shirokuma shaved ice.

06Fri 12 Mar 2027 · KagoshimaChoose your southern adventure

Option A: Ibusuki · Option B: Sakurajima

The day ahead

For railway lovers, the Ibusuki no Tamatebako makes a memorable outing along the bay. Alternatively, cross to Sakurajima for a volcano-side day. Choose one and let it be the day’s main event.

Coastline through a train window, or sea air from the ferry: both give you a different view of the south.

07Sat 13 Mar 2027 · KagoshimaA day with nothing to chase

A flexible day from Shiroyama

The day ahead

Keep this day for the place you liked most, a weather-delayed outing or simply the hotel and a long lunch. A four-night stay should include time to enjoy staying put.

A second visit to a favourite café often becomes more memorable than another attraction.

08Sun 14 Mar 2027 · Fukuoka / HakataFly north for Fukuoka flavours

Kagoshima (KOJ) → Fukuoka (FUK) → Hakata

The day ahead

A short domestic hop takes you to Fukuoka. Unpack for three nights and make your first evening an easy ramen night near the hotel.

Hakata ramen, a station food hall and a city that takes dinner seriously.

09Mon 15 Mar 2027 · Fukuoka / HakataPark paths and a good dinner

Hakata → Ohori Park → Tenjin / Nakasu

The day ahead

Spend a gentle morning around Ohori Park, then explore Tenjin or the city’s riverside districts. If the evening suits, try a yatai stall with a menu and prices displayed.

Let the meal be the event, with time to walk along the river afterwards.

10Tue 16 Mar 2027 · Fukuoka / HakataOne more day in Kyushu

City day or optional Dazaifu outing

The day ahead

Choose a local museum, shopping and cafés, or make Dazaifu your principal outing. Finish with time to pack for the faster-moving railway chapter.

Pick up a few snacks for the coming train journeys.

11Wed 17 Mar 2027 · HimejiFrom Kyushu to castle country

Fukuoka (FUK) → Osaka Itami (ITM) → Himeji

The day ahead

Fly to Itami, then continue to Himeji for a comfortable overnight at Dormy Inn. With an afternoon flight, keep castle interiors for tomorrow morning.

Dinner, a hot spring and a first glimpse of the castle from the station-side boulevard.

12Thu 18 Mar 2027 · HiroshimaWhite castle, then Hiroshima

Himeji → Hiroshima · Pass day 1

The day ahead

Visit Himeji Castle in the morning if your chosen train leaves enough time. Continue west on the Sanyo Shinkansen, then devote the available afternoon to Hiroshima’s Peace Memorial Park and, if time permits, the museum.

A thoughtful city afternoon and a Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki dinner.

13Fri 19 Mar 2027 · Kinosaki OnsenInto the onsen hills

Hiroshima → Himeji → Kinosaki Onsen · Pass day 2

The day ahead

Travel back to Himeji and turn north through the mountains to Kinosaki. Arrive with time to check in, organise bathing and enjoy the lantern-lit town.

The evening belongs to a bathhouse, a local dinner and the canal paths.

14Sat 20 Mar 2027 · TottoriThe coast outside your window

Kinosaki Onsen → Hamasaka → Tottori · Pass day 3

The day ahead

Follow the San’in corridor west through small coastal communities. This is a day for the journey itself. Reach Tottori for a city evening and a hotel hot spring.

If arrival and daylight allow, the Tottori dunes make an optional outing; a relaxed town evening is equally worthwhile.

15Sun 21 Mar 2027 · NaraAcross the hills to old Nara

Tottori → Himeji → Shin-Osaka → Osaka → JR Nara · Pass day 4

The day ahead

Take Super Hakuto through the inland landscape, rejoin the Sanyo corridor at Himeji, and continue to Nara. Keep the evening light after this longer travel day.

An old-town walk if time allows, or a quiet dinner beside your convenient final hotel.

16Mon 22 Mar 2027 · Fly homeOne last Nara morning

JR Nara → Tennoji → Kansai Airport (KIX) · Pass day 5

The day ahead

Enjoy breakfast and a short Nara walk if the flight schedule permits. Collect your luggage and head to Kansai Airport for the journey home. Sydney arrival is the following day in this March example.

A final café stop, one last look at the old streets, and plenty of time to leave well.

Your air & rail companion.

THE THREE DOMESTIC HOPS

Airports that move the journey along.

  1. 10 MarchHND → KOJTokyo Haneda to Kagoshima
  2. 14 MarchKOJ → FUKKagoshima to Fukuoka
  3. 17 MarchFUK → ITMFukuoka to Osaka Itami

Keep each flight’s current terminal, baggage allowance and boarding instructions with your reservation. Arrive around two hours before a domestic flight as a comfortable planning margin, adding transfer time separately.

Itami is not Kansai Airport. You arrive at Itami on 17 March and fly home from Kansai on 22 March.

THE FIVE-DAY RAIL FINALE

One regional pass.
Five well-used days.

¥17,000 adult / 5 consecutive days

JR-West Kansai–Hiroshima Area Pass
Set the start date to 18 March 2027; it then runs through 22 March.

It covers the eligible Sanyo Shinkansen, JR limited expresses and local JR legs within its area. It does not cover the earlier flights, Kyushu outings, city subways or the Itami airport coach.

The Tottori exception: pay separately for Super Hakuto between Tottori and Kamigori. The normal-season reference is ¥4,030 (¥1,910 fare + ¥2,120 reserved express charge); allow about ¥4,500 and have the ticket office price the actual date and through reservation.

The pass is for eligible overseas visitors with a non-Japanese passport and Temporary Visitor status. Reserve seats before boarding services that require reservations.

01 / 18 MAR

Himeji → Hiroshima

Reserved Sanyo Shinkansen. Leave a sensible gap after the castle visit.

02 / 19 MAR

Hiroshima → Kinosaki

Shinkansen to Himeji, then a suitable Hamakaze. Aim for an afternoon arrival before 18:00.

03 / 20 MAR

Kinosaki → Tottori

San’in local trains via Hamasaka. Check the full connection, not just the first departure.

04 / 21 MAR

Tottori → Nara

Super Hakuto to Himeji; Shinkansen to Shin-Osaka, then JR connections through Osaka.

05 / 22 MAR

Nara → Kansai Airport

JR to Tennoji and reserved Haruka. Keep an ample international-flight buffer.

01

Reserve in the right order.

Book hotels and flights first. Standard JR reservations open at 10:00 Japan time one calendar month before each train’s travel date. Set a separate reminder for each of the five days.

Super Hakuto is all-reserved. Arrange its uncovered segment and through seat together, then choose the onward connections.

JR-West route search & reservations ↗
02

Make the small bag your friend.

The rail finale changes hotel each night. Travel with luggage you can manage on local trains and stairs, and use station storage when sightseeing before check-in.

For the Sanyo Shinkansen, a bag over 160 cm and up to 250 cm in combined dimensions needs the appropriate oversized-baggage seat reservation.

Fumi’s tickets & luggage guide →
03

Protect the final connections.

21 March is the 2027 spring equinox holiday and 22 March is the substitute holiday. Book the final weekend’s seats early and leave generous time for the airport.

If a coastal connection is disrupted, speak to station staff before changing route. Keep your next hotel’s name and check-in time saved offline.
