THE LITTLE THINGS THAT HELP
Before you step out.
Useful now, and easy to find again on your phone.
01
Begin on the east side of the station
The east exit is the town side, with Takayama Nohi Bus Center nearby. The old town is a walk across the centre; save energy with a taxi if you would rather spend your time exploring.
Miyagawa and Jinya-mae are separate markets. Come before noon, bring some cash and allow for weather and stallholders’ own schedules. Shops and cafés elsewhere have their own hours.
Hida Folk Village is an open-air museum outside the centre. Use the local bus or a taxi, check your return and choose a manageable path rather than every house.
Temple lanes and the folk village include slopes and uneven surfaces. Rain, snow and ice change what is comfortable. Choose an open town museum, a merchant house and a seated lunch for a shorter indoor-focused day.
Keep private doorways clear, ask before photographing people and follow house rules. Eat where the vendor permits, and remember that many shops close before dinner.
Hida beef, miso, local vegetables and Takayama ramen invite questions. Fumi can explain dishes and help you talk with the staff, making lunch a richer part of the day. Confirm ingredients and allergies directly before ordering.
Choose the old-town outing for Jinya, timber streets and the riverside. If you arrive early, the morning market and one merchant house make another lovely start. A second day gives you time for the festival quarter or Hida Folk Village.
Can I walk everywhere?
The old town, river market and northern festival quarter can be combined on foot with breaks, although the distance adds up. Higashiyama has slopes and steps. Use a bus or taxi to Hida Folk Village and choose shorter versions whenever you prefer.
Are the morning markets open at night?
No. Plan the morning markets before noon; winter starts are later and weather affects stalls. For dinner choose a restaurant with confirmed evening service, such as Aji no Yohei on its opening days.
Will I see the Takayama Festival?
The spring and autumn festivals take place on specific dates. The Festival Floats Exhibition Hall gives you a year-round way to appreciate selected floats when open, but a normal visit does not include a parade or guarantee a live performance.
Is Hida Folk Village the same as Shirakawa-go?
No. Hida Folk Village is an open-air museum near Takayama. Shirakawa-go is a separate destination requiring its own transport plan and much more time. This village outing does not include Shirakawa-go.
What works well in rain?
Takayama Jinya, the town museum, the festival-floats hall and merchant houses offer indoor time when open. Their connecting walks are outside, and historic buildings may have thresholds or stairs. Check each calendar before choosing your day.
Do I need to book through Fumi?
No. The guide and day planner are free, and FumiTours receives no booking commissions. Use the official links and arrange your own meals, visits and transport.
Can I keep my day on my phone?
Yes. Save places, add stops to My day, change their order and share the link or save a day sheet. Saved choices stay in this browser. Open the Fumi app separately and tell her the places you want to visit.
