THE LITTLE THINGS THAT HELP
Before you step out.
Useful now, and easy to find again on your phone.
01
Check the mountain before setting out
The ropeway is closed 20 October–8 November 2026. Confirm the summit bus from Hakodate Station or a taxi for those dates; the mountain road closes on 9 November at 11:00. Check live weather and the last return before travelling.
The harbour, Goryokaku and Yunokawa are separate areas. Check the tram’s direction and final stop, and include walks to the attractions. Goryokaku Koen-mae tram stop is different from JR Goryokaku station.
Motomachi’s views come with steep streets. A taxi to the upper quarter can save energy, and a shorter walk is often enough. Ice, snow and coastal wind can make distances feel longer than the map suggests.
Have breakfast or an early lunch, then continue to the harbour. Individual stalls and restaurants set their own hours. Check the price and ingredients before ordering, and confirm allergies directly with the venue.
Old Soma has Tuesday, Wednesday and winter closures. Other historic buildings and church interiors follow their own calendars. Pick one or two open interiors and leave room for a café between them.
Hakodate city station and Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Shinkansen station are different places, linked by local rail. Check the actual departure station, connection and luggage arrangements for your onward trip.
Start with breakfast at the Morning Market, enjoy the red-brick warehouse area and choose a short Motomachi viewpoint if the hills suit you. A café and a relaxed meal are part of the day. Save the mountain for a clear evening with confirmed transport.
Is the Mount Hakodate ropeway running now?
The ropeway is closed 20 October–8 November 2026. During that period, check route 1 from Hakodate Station terminal, stand 4, or arrange a summit taxi, confirming the return first. The road closes for winter on 9 November at 11:00, separately from ropeway operation. Use the current operator notices for your date.
Can I see the main places without a car?
Yes. Central sights combine with the tram, walking and taxis. Goryokaku and Yunokawa need separate travel time, while Trappistine and the mountain require closer attention to current transport. Motomachi’s steep approaches are worth allowing for even when places look close together.
What is good in rain or cold weather?
Choose an open historic interior, the tower or Magistrate’s Office at Goryokaku, or a longer meal and warehouse browse. The botanical garden has greenhouse space. Transfers and street approaches are still outdoors, and a foggy day can hide observation-deck views.
Will I see monkeys bathing in hot water?
The botanical garden’s monkey-bathing season normally starts in December and continues into spring. It is not a year-round attraction, and animal care or conditions can change what is happening. Check the garden’s current programme and enjoy the plants as part of the visit.
Is the Old Soma Residence open in winter?
Its current notice lists winter closure 1 December 2026–31 March 2027. Autumn 2026 opening runs through 30 November, normally 11:00–16:00, closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Check the latest operator notice before choosing the merchant-house outing.
Is Hakodate station the Shinkansen station?
No. The Shinkansen serves Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto, with a connecting local train to Hakodate city station. Allow for the connection and check your booked departure station. Within the city, also distinguish JR Goryokaku station from Goryokaku Koen-mae tram stop.
