Railway guide 02 • Intercity travel

A confident Shinkansen transfer.

A working guide to the Shin-Osaka–Atami–Tokyo corridor, with time for the station as well as the train.

Before reaching the station.

  • Confirm the departure station: Shin-Osaka is the Shinkansen station; it is not JR Osaka Station.
  • Save the actual service, date, departure, car and seat. Keep those private details in your own travel record.
  • Check the boarding method for your booking: paper ticket, supported QR ticket or a correctly linked IC card. A balance on an IC card does not buy a Shinkansen reservation.
  • Measure large luggage. On the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen, ordinary baggage over 160 cm and up to 250 cm in combined dimensions needs a seat with the relevant oversized-baggage area. Confirm the current rule and any special-item exception directly.

Hommachi to the right platform.

Hommachi → Midosuji Line northbound → Shin-Osaka → Shinkansen gates → confirmed car position

Follow the Shinkansen signs and check the full train name and number on the departure board. Separate the time needed to reach the station from the time needed to find the gate and platform. Platform numbers belong to the service on the day.

Use SmartEX’s instructions for your chosen boarding method, especially at transfer gates. Do not improvise by tapping different cards if the gate refuses entry; show the booking to staff.

Make the Atami stop intentional.

Atami is on the Tokaido Shinkansen. Nozomi does not stop there; use a suitable Hikari that lists Atami or a Kodama. Check the complete stopping pattern before paying.

If staying for several nights, book the travel legs to match the stop. A SmartEX booking is not an open-ended stopover ticket: check its conditions and use separate journeys where required.

Atami’s slopes are part of the station-to-town journey. Evaluate the real walk with luggage rather than judging it from distance alone.

The transfer is not over at Tokyo Station.

If continuing to Shiomi, follow signs for the JR Keiyo Line and take a service that stops there. The walk to the Keiyo platforms is a significant part of the transfer. Leave a buffer instead of assuming adjacent platforms.

For another Tokyo base, choose the final line and exit from the accommodation’s actual address. A Tokyo arrival and a Shinjuku arrival can lead to very different onward journeys.

Planning principle: record walking, waiting and riding separately. “Train time” is not the same as door-to-door time.
