Read the film transcript

Winter Japan unfolds between cold forest air and the warmth of a mountain inn. There is time to savour the contrasts. Snow Monkeys and Mountain Inns is a nine-day, eight-night journey, beginning with a gentle night at Haneda before the railway leads towards Kinugawa’s river valley.

Two nights leave time for bathing and Nikko’s forested shrines, with a welcoming table to return to. Then comes the first of two long railway days: an ekiben by the window, changing landscapes, and the climb to Zao Onsen. Two nights allow mountain cafés, hot springs and, when weather allows, the ropeway’s far-reaching views.

Another full travel day leads to Shibu Onsen: two nights of lantern-lit lanes and a traditional inn’s slower rhythm. An unhurried forest walk leads towards Jigokudani, and a chance to watch wild macaques in their mountain world. Back in Shibu, old bathhouses add another lovely chapter to the evening.

Inn evenings leave time to savour regional cooking, with a meal plan chosen to suit the stay. A final Haneda night softens departure. Fumi helps make a menu, a railway sign or a local custom feel more familiar.

Day 1 is arrival in Japan. The final day is departure; overnight flights can arrive home the following morning.

A journey to make your own

Winter outside. A warm welcome within.

A snowy forest path. A warm inn at the end of the railway. Dinner worth coming back for. Follow a winter circuit through Kinugawa, Zao and Shibu Onsen, with time for Nikko’s shrine country and the wild macaques of Jigokudani.

Meals are part of the journey

Six breakfasts and six dinners in the historical plan make the inns central to the holiday. Match the meal inclusions when choosing new rates.

Three hot-spring settings

A river valley, a snowy mountain resort and an old bathhouse town each give the journey a different character.

Make room for winter

Two-night mountain stays leave time to settle in. The terminal-connected first and last nights keep the airport ends gentle.

The connections, carefully explained

Travel with confidence.

Haneda → Kinugawa Onsen

Begin with Keikyu / Toei transport from Haneda toward Asakusa, then use a reserved Tobu limited express to Kinugawa-Onsen.

A direct Tobu limited express from Asakusa takes roughly 1 hr 50 min. Both a normal-fare ticket and a limited-express reserved-seat ticket are required.

Historical whole-leg estimate: 3–3.5 hr; ¥3,700–4,400.

Kinugawa Onsen → Zao Onsen

Recommended beginner-friendly structure:

  1. Tobu limited express from Kinugawa toward Asakusa.
  2. Transfer to Ueno.
  3. Yamagata Shinkansen to Yamagata.
  4. Bus from Yamagata Station to Zao Onsen.

This is not necessarily the shortest theoretical routing, but it is easier to explain, reserve and recover if a connection changes.

Planning time: allow about 6–7 hours including comfortable transfers, and longer during winter disruption.

Historical fare allowance: ¥10,600–13,000; recheck the full connection and fare.

Zao Onsen → Shibu Onsen

  1. Bus Zao Onsen → Yamagata Station.
  2. Yamagata Shinkansen → Omiya.
  3. Hokuriku Shinkansen → Nagano.
  4. Nagano Dentetsu limited express → Yudanaka.
  5. Prearranged ryokan shuttle → Shibu Onsen.

Planning time: about 7–7½ hours, depending on the bus, trains and shuttle.

Historical fare allowance: ¥14,000–23,000. These are planning references, not a reserved timetable.

This is the grand railway day. Reserve seats, forward the large suitcase if practical and carry a small overnight bag.

Shibu Onsen → Haneda

  1. Ryokan shuttle → Yudanaka.
  2. Nagano Dentetsu → Nagano.
  3. Hokuriku Shinkansen → Tokyo.
  4. Yamanote Line → Hamamatsucho.
  5. Tokyo Monorail → Haneda Terminal 3.

Planning time: allow about 4–5 hours including comfortable transfers.

Historical fare allowance: ¥7,500–12,000.

Pass verdict

No nationwide rail pass is assumed. Individual reserved tickets provide the greatest flexibility for this unusual cross-country route.

Comfort, access and preparation

Make the plan work for you.

Suitability and winter preparation

This journey may not suit travellers who:

  • cannot manage a winter walk of about thirty minutes each way on snow or uneven ground;
  • dislike long rail-transfer days;
  • require step-free access throughout;
  • prefer major-city nightlife to rural inns.

Recommended:

  • waterproof shoes with grip;
  • thermal layers and gloves;
  • a small travel bag;
  • luggage forwarding from Kinugawa or Zao to Haneda;
  • reserved seats for all limited express and Shinkansen sectors;
  • cash and schedule buffer for winter disruptions.

Rooms, meals and local charges

Prices are US dollars per person unless stated otherwise. Where a room is shared, the example means two travellers sharing one private guest room. An own-room example means one room per traveller.

Choose the exact room, occupancy and meal plan before booking. Private toilets, shared bathing facilities and an ensuite bath or shower are different arrangements. Tell each inn about dietary requirements before committing to a meal plan.

Allow for local accommodation and bathing taxes unless the selected rate expressly includes them, plus optional luggage services, insurance and shopping. Fares, exchange rates and hotel prices vary with your dates.

Luggage and a comfortable pace

Travel with a bag you can manage at stairs and station changes. Confirm luggage-forwarding delivery days and the receiving hotel’s arrangements before dispatch. Keep passports, medicine and essentials with you, and carry enough clothes for the nights before your main bag arrives.

Put the journey together

Check the whole route before booking, starting with the international flights and the small inns. Match each arrival to the property’s check-in and dinner deadline. Then reserve trains where required and keep flexible outings for the weather and your energy.

Day 1 is arrival in Japan; the last numbered day is departure from Japan. An overnight flight home can arrive the following day.
