A little longer than a week

Three different Japans.
One memorable escape.

Give your wonder week a few extra days. This ten-night escape pairs three nights at a Hakodate ryokan with Osaka’s tower-hotel drama and two delicious nights in Fukuoka. Fly between regions, keep a room of your own and return to Tokyo two nights before the journey home.

From north to south & home

Five stays. Four domestic flights.

Haneda one night, Hakodate three, Osaka two, Fukuoka two, Tokyo or Haneda two, then fly home
Journey sequence, not a navigation map. Osaka flights use Itami Airport.

Your five overnight bases

  1. 01Haneda / Tokyo1 night
  2. 02Hakodate / Yunokawa3 nights
  3. 03Osaka2 nights
  4. 04Fukuoka2 nights
  5. 05Tokyo / Haneda2 nights

Three regional chapters, framed by Tokyo. Each flight day includes the airport journey, check-in and the transfer to your next hotel.

The three regional chapters

Steam, skyline & something delicious.

01 / HAKODATE

Tatami, steam
& a harbour view.

Three nights in Yunokawa give you time for the market, a tram ride and an evening looking down over Hakodate. Return to your ryokan for the quiet pleasure of a hot bath.

Explore Hakodate ↗
02 / OSAKA

Go out for dinner.
Stay in for the skyline.

Let the tower hotel be part of the experience. Take in Nakanoshima, Umeda or Dotonbori, then make time for Candeo’s rooftop SkySpa.

Discover the SkySpa ↗
03 / FUKUOKA

A good bowl.
A very good evening.

Start with Hakata ramen. Add a park walk, neighbourhood cafés and an evening at a yatai stall. Two nights leave space for a second favourite meal.

Rooms with a reason

Make the hotel part of the holiday.

Two named hotels give this journey its character. Choose the Tokyo and Fukuoka bases around the same solo-room budget.

Stop 01 · 1 night · Choose your arrival hotel

Haneda / Tokyo airport hotel

An easy first night after the international flight. Choose a terminal-connected hotel or a nearby property with an arrival transfer that fits your flight.

A$180 per person for the stay · planning estimate

Solo-room allowance: A$180. Check the arrival terminal, hotel access and last shuttle before choosing. Meals are extra in this plan.

Stop 02 · 3 nights · The northern ryokan chapter

Tabist Chikuba Shinyotei

Tatami rooms, traditional interiors and garden-facing hot-spring baths in Yunokawa, close to Hakodate Airport. Three nights give you two full days to explore.

A$364 per person for the stay · planning estimate

The example uses a Japanese-style Main Building room with breakfast only. Price it for one adult: a room described as quadruple refers to its capacity. Dinner is extra; futon bedding and shared bathing are part of the experience.

Stop 03 · 2 nights · The skyline stay

Candeo Hotels Osaka The Tower

Make time for the hotel itself. Its 31st-floor SkySpa combines open-air bathing, an indoor bath and sauna, with the city spread below.

A$500 per person for the stay · planning estimate

Solo-room allowance: A$250 a night. Choose the room and view category you want, and check meal inclusions. The SkySpa is a bathing facility; it is not a private bath in every room.

Stop 04 · 2 nights · A city for your appetite

Your Fukuoka city base

Choose Hakata for transport, Tenjin for shopping and cafés, or Nakasu for evening atmosphere. Keep the hotel close to a useful station and spend your time exploring.

A$400 per person for the stay · planning estimate

Solo-room allowance: A$200 a night. The hotel remains yours to choose. Breakfast and other meals are extra in this estimate.

Stop 05 · 2 nights · Two nights before flying home

Tokyo / Haneda final stay

Return from Fukuoka with two nights left in Japan. Stay near Haneda for airport convenience, or choose a Tokyo neighbourhood with a straightforward departure-day connection.

A$360 per person for the stay · planning estimate

Solo-room allowance: A$180 a night. A late flight does not include late hotel checkout: arrange luggage storage or price a day room if you want a private place to rest.

Your eleven days in Japan

A little structure. Plenty of freedom.

Day 1 is your arrival day in Japan. Choose one or two highlights each day and leave the rest open.

Days 1–4 · From Haneda to Hakodate
  1. Day 01Haneda / Tokyo · 1 night

    Land softly at Haneda

Arrive in Tokyo and settle into the airport-area hotel you have chosen. Keep dinner and the first evening simple, then sleep before tomorrow’s domestic flight.

  2. Day 02Hakodate · night 1 of 3

    North to Hakodate

Fly from Haneda to Hakodate, then transfer to Yunokawa Onsen. Check into Chikuba Shinyotei, settle into your tatami room and make time for the first bath.

  3. Day 03Hakodate · night 2 of 3

    Seafood morning, harbour evening

Browse Hakodate’s morning market and explore the bay area. Choose a clear evening for Mount Hakodate’s night view, checking the ropeway’s operation before setting out.

  4. Day 04Hakodate · night 3 of 3

    A slower Yunokawa day

Take the tram towards Goryokaku, enjoy a café stop or keep more time for the ryokan. Let weather and walking conditions shape the day, then return for another hot-spring soak.

Days 5–8 · Osaka skyline & Fukuoka flavours
  1. Day 05Osaka · night 1 of 2

From onsen town to Osaka tower

Fly to Osaka Itami and continue to Candeo Hotels Osaka The Tower. After check-in, enjoy the skyline and SkySpa, then choose an easy dinner nearby.

  2. Day 06Osaka · night 2 of 2

    Osaka at two speeds

Take a relaxed walk around Nakanoshima or Umeda, or visit Osaka Castle. Later, head to Dotonbori for dinner, with time to return to the hotel and its rooftop baths.

  3. Day 07Fukuoka · night 1 of 2

    Fly south for supper

Return to Itami for the flight to Fukuoka. Its domestic terminal connects to the subway. Settle into Hakata, Tenjin or Nakasu and make your first bowl of Hakata ramen part of the welcome.

  4. Day 08Fukuoka · night 2 of 2

    A city to taste slowly

Walk around Ohori Park, browse the shops and choose an evening yatai from the official city guide. Dazaifu is an optional alternative outing if you want a temple visit instead.

Days 9–11 · A relaxed Tokyo finish
  1. Day 09Tokyo / Haneda · night 1 of 2

Return to Tokyo with time in hand

Fly from Fukuoka to Haneda and settle into your final hotel. Enjoy a quiet dinner or an easy neighbourhood walk; there is no international connection to rush for today.

  2. Day 10Tokyo / Haneda · night 2 of 2

    Your last full Tokyo day

Choose one manageable outing: Ginza, a waterfront afternoon in Odaiba, or the airport area’s food and bathing options. Check admission and access for any onsen visit.

  3. Day 11Departure day · no hotel night

    An easy departure day

Check out, leave luggage with the hotel where available and keep the day close to your departure route. Allow time for Haneda’s international check-in. The original plan uses an overnight flight, arriving in Sydney on day 12.

The journey between the stays

Fly between regions. Explore on the ground.

International arrival & departure

Sydney ↔ Tokyo Haneda

The original example uses Virgin Australia flights operated by ANA, with an evening arrival and an overnight return. Allow A$1,650.60 per person, then compare schedules and fares for your own dates.

Four JAL domestic hops.

The supplied flight estimates total A$517 per person. They are separate sector estimates, not a single unlimited-flight pass. Check each route’s schedule and fare availability before locking in hotels.

Baggage, airports & the final evening

Check the ticket’s baggage.

Virgin Australia’s current Japan Choice page lists 7kg total cabin baggage across up to two pieces and one 23kg checked bag. Follow the allowance shown on your issued ticket, and check the separate JAL flights too.

Virgin Australia fare inclusions ↗

Choose the right airport.

Osaka uses Itami (ITM) on both legs. Fukuoka’s domestic terminal connects directly to the subway; Yunokawa is close to Hakodate Airport. Allow for the full transfer, not just flying time.

Fukuoka Airport subway ↗

Plan the hours after checkout.

The final hotel stay ends on departure morning. Arrange luggage storage, an easy outing or a separately priced day room before an evening flight. Keep a generous airport check-in margin.

The small details

Settle in comfortably.

Make room for the weather.

March in Hakodate can be cold, with variable ground conditions. Pack layers and footwear with good grip, and choose the clearest evening for the mountain view.

Make the room fit you.

The Hakodate stay is Japanese-style, with futon bedding. Check the room layout and bath access before booking if a western bed or step-free route matters to you.

Leave room for appetite.

Keep dinners flexible in Osaka and Fukuoka. In Hakodate, breakfast-only accommodation lets you choose between seafood in town and a separately arranged ryokan dinner.
