Suica

IPHONE · APPLE WALLET

A Suica card on your phone.

On a compatible iPhone, you can create Suica directly in Apple Wallet. You don’t need a separate Suica app for this method.

  1. Open Wallet. Tap the + button, then Transit Card or Travel Card (the label varies by region).
  2. Choose Suica. Tap Continue or Add New Card, as shown.
  3. Add an amount in yen. Confirm payment with an eligible payment card in Apple Wallet.
  4. Check your new card. Your first added travel card normally has Express Mode enabled, ready for the gate.

You need a compatible device, current software, Apple Account with two-factor authentication and a supported payment card. If payment or setup fails, use the plastic-card option instead.

What about the Welcome Suica Mobile app?

JR East also has an English visitor app for compatible iPhones. It is another way to issue and manage Suica. Choose one setup method to start; you don’t need both. Check its current device and location requirements before installing.

ANDROID · CHECK COMPATIBILITY FIRST

Google Wallet alone isn’t enough.

Japanese mobile transport cards require a compatible Osaifu-Keitai device — Japan’s mobile payment system. Many phones bought outside Japan do not support it, even if they have NFC and work with Google Wallet at home.

Our straightforward recommendation: unless you already know your phone supports Japanese mobile Suica or ICOCA, buy a plastic Suica or ICOCA when you arrive. You can use it for the same everyday tapping at participating gates.

Downloading a Suica app from the Play Store cannot add missing hardware support. If you have a compatible Japanese-market phone, follow the card provider’s own setup instructions.

PHYSICAL CARD · NO PHONE SETUP NEEDED

A little card. An easy first journey.

  1. Buy a local card. In Kansai, ask for ICOCA at a participating JR West station machine or ticket office. In Tokyo, ask staff about Suica or visitor Welcome Suica availability.
  2. Choose English on the machine. Look for the card name and the purchase option, or ask the attendant.
  3. Pay in yen. A standard ¥2,000 ICOCA purchase includes a ¥500 deposit and ¥1,500 ready to spend. Other products have different terms.
  4. Keep it separate when tapping. Take it out of a wallet containing other contactless cards so the reader detects only the card you want.

Top up with cash at compatible station machines or participating convenience stores. Look for “Charge” or “Recharge”. Check the balance before a longer ride.

Physical Welcome Suica is a visitor product valid for 28 days, with no refund of unused balance. It has different terms from an ordinary Suica or ICOCA; choose the product that suits your stay.

Add money.
Keep exploring.

On iPhone

Open Wallet and select Suica to see your balance. Choose Add Money, enter the amount and confirm with an eligible payment card. You need an internet connection to top up.

At the gate, with Express Mode enabled, hold the top of the iPhone near the reader. There’s no need to open an app, unlock the phone or use Face ID. Tapping does not need a mobile signal.

Keep your phone charged. Use the same device at entry and exit — an Apple Watch and iPhone aren’t interchangeable mid-journey.

With a plastic card

Use a compatible top-up machine, select English, place the card as shown and choose Charge. Insert yen and collect your card and change. Ask staff if the machine isn’t clear.

You can also ask at a participating convenience-store counter. Cash is the dependable option for recharging a physical card; don’t assume a foreign bank card will work in the machine.

Kyoto Station concourse01 / 05

Plan the whole journey.

Enter your destination in a route planner. Choose a route with comfortable walking and transfer time. Save the station names, company, line, direction and useful exit — not just the departure time.

Try this: for your first practice ride, choose one short journey without a transfer. Save a screenshot while you have internet.

Railway company entrances at Kansai Airport02 / 05

Find your company, then your line.

At the station, follow the company and line signs. “JR” and “Metro” can lead to different gates, even inside the same building. Look for a lift before entering if you need step-free access.

Pause here: if the sign doesn’t match your route, stand out of the flow of people and check before going through.

Ticket gates at Kyoto Station03 / 05

Tap once and walk through.

For an ordinary journey paid with Suica or ICOCA, hold your card or compatible phone still over the reader. Wait for the confirmation before moving through. Keep that same card or device for the exit.

If the gate says no: step aside and ask the attendant. Repeatedly tapping or following someone through won’t solve the problem.

A train and platform at Kansai Airport Station04 / 05

Check the train, then board.

Match the line, direction, service and stops with the departure board. On the platform, queue at the marked boarding position and let people off first. Keep your luggage close and listen for the next stop.

Reserved train? Also match the departure time, train name, carriage and seat to your booking.

Ticket gates at Osaka Station05 / 05

Tap out. Find the right exit.

Use the same card or phone at the exit gate. The fare is deducted and the gate display normally shows the remaining balance. If it’s too low, use a top-up or fare-adjustment machine, or ask staff.

One last check: follow the numbered or named exit for your destination. In a large station, the wrong side can mean a long extra walk.

GOOD FOR EVERYDAY TRAVEL

Local journeys & small purchases

  • Many city trains, subways and buses displaying a compatible transport-card logo.
  • Many convenience stores, vending machines and other participating shops.
  • Pay-as-you-go fares without buying a new paper ticket for every ordinary ride.

At a shop, say “Suica” or point to the transport-card logo, then tap when prompted. On buses, follow that operator’s instructions: boarding and payment arrangements vary.

CHECK BEFORE YOU TRAVEL

Longer & special journeys

  • For a Tokyo–Kyoto Shinkansen trip, buy the proper ticket or booking separately.
  • Limited-express trains can require an extra ticket, even where Suica pays the ordinary fare.
  • Some rural lines and buses do not accept transport cards.
  • A single continuous journey cannot generally cross separate IC-card service areas. Ask about a paper ticket before boarding.

A card linked to a paid train reservation can act as the gate key. That is different from paying for the reservation from its stored balance.
