Field exercises • 2–3 days, at your own pace

Osaka: learn the network.

A flexible two-to-three-day programme: arrival rail, a useful subway spine and a deliberate operator change.

Prepare, then practise. Read the city railway guide for operator choices, useful stations and common transfer traps. These exercises turn that guidance into observations on the ground.

What you will learn.

Explain the difference between Nankai, Osaka Metro and JR; select the correct service and exit; measure the walking hidden inside a transfer.

The working modules.

Exercise O1

The airport-to-city handover

Kansai Airport → Rinku Town; later Rinku Town → Nankai Namba → Metro Namba → Hommachi

Do
Separate the arrival exercise from the city transfer if that better suits your energy. Identify JR and Nankai gates, check the train stops at your destination and confirm whether an additional ticket is required. At Namba, follow the signs to Osaka Metro before looking for the northbound Midosuji platform.
Observe
Time the walk between operator gates. Which sign first tells you this is the right Namba? Where could a tired traveller confuse the two systems?
Check & bring back
Explain why an Airport Express fare and a Rapi:t reservation are not the same purchase. Save one clear transfer note, without private ticket images.

Exercise O2

Build a mental map of the Midosuji Line

Hommachi → Shinsaibashi → Namba → Umeda → Hommachi

Do
Break the route into short rides and walks. At each station, read the next stops and choose an exit for a specific street. In Umeda, find the signed route to JR Osaka and identify how the station names differ.
Observe
Compare the effort of a short train ride with the surface walk. Note where line colours help, and where an operator or station name matters more.
Check & bring back
Describe the route back to Hommachi without relying solely on a coloured line. Distinguish Metro Umeda, JR Osaka and Hankyu Osaka-umeda.

Exercise O3

Change from subway to JR

Hommachi → Morinomiya on the Chuo Line → JR Osaka Loop Line → JR Osaka → Metro Umeda → Hommachi

Do
Use the Chuo Line to Morinomiya and find the JR connection. Select a train whose current destination and stops suit the journey to Osaka. Follow signs from JR Osaka to Metro Umeda for the return.
Observe
Count gate boundaries and level changes. Record the transfer walk, whether a lift is easy to locate and whether the suggested connection feels comfortable.
Check & bring back
Do not assume every Osaka Loop Line train keeps circling indefinitely. Verify the train shown on the board. Write a three-step operator-change instruction.

Your end-of-day record.

Bring back one verified route note, three observations that matter to a traveller, and one question to investigate. Keep original mistakes in the record when you retest a corrected instruction.
